Most IB Chemistry SL students treat lab sessions as coursework to complete: run the experiment, record the table, move on. It’s the path of least resistance—and it quietly costs marks. Every time a student records a measurement, expresses its uncertainty, or evaluates a result’s reliability, they’re rehearsing the exact reasoning that Paper 2 data-based questions and the internal assessment both require.

The student who pauses after recording a titre to ask why that measurement matters, what limits its precision, and how they’d defend it in writing is doing something fundamentally different from passive completion—and building skills that compound across two years of coursework.

The Skill Transfer That Markschemes Reward

A 2026 longitudinal study published in Frontiers in Education tracked secondary science students across Grades 11 and 12 and found that internal laboratory-based assessment scores were positively associated with later external exam performance, even after accounting for prior achievement. Grade 12 lab assessments were particularly informative for predicting outcomes—the year closest to IB final-year demands. The same study reported that Grade 12 indirect, reasoning-focused written assessments showed greater score dispersion than earlier, more structured formats: these are the tasks where student results spread furthest apart. The association indicates that internal lab assessment performance is genuinely linked to external written exam results—not incidental to them.

The same paper explains why the link exists. Hands-on practicals and written exam tasks draw on overlapping inquiry competencies: direct practical formats build procedural skill—designing investigations, recording measurements, evaluating results—while written formats test the same reasoning applied to unfamiliar data, asking students to interpret, draw conclusions, and judge methods without doing the experiment. For an SL student, effort invested in lab reasoning transfers in both directions: it improves internal assessment (IA) quality and sharpens performance on written data questions. The research covers secondary science broadly, and the connection to IB Chemistry SL is a well-supported inference rather than a direct finding—but it still sharpens a practical question: which lab skills most reliably convert into marks on written papers?

Where to Focus First—Quantitative Skills in the Lab

Percentage uncertainty is the flagship example: drilled in labs, tested on written papers, and assessed in IA marking criteria. A teacher-facing worked example from Practical Science makes the propagation concrete using a titration—each burette reading carries an instrument uncertainty of ±0.05 cm³, and because a titre requires two readings (final minus initial), those uncertainties add to give ±0.10 cm³ on the delivered volume before you divide by the measured value and multiply by 100 to reach the percentage figure. That chain of reasoning is precisely what IB Chemistry SL data-based questions and IA precision criteria ask students to reproduce in writing. Students who rehearse it in the lab find Paper 2 measurement questions recognizable rather than novel.

  • One key measurement with its instrument uncertainty—record a value you could defend in a data-based question (e.g., burette reading ±0.05 cm³)
  • Derived uncertainty on the quantity you actually use—for a titre, uncertainty adds across two readings (e.g., ±0.10 cm³)
  • Percentage uncertainty: absolute uncertainty ÷ measured value × 100
  • One evaluation sentence: name the main precision limitation in this setup and one realistic improvement
  • Weekly check: if you cannot reproduce these four items from your last lab without looking anything up, make uncertainty and evaluation write-downs your priority in the next practical

Significant figures and unit handling are the next priority—errors in either cost marks on papers and in the IA, and labs are the natural place to fix them as habits rather than exam-period rules. Graphical analysis belongs in the same priority tier because the interpretive question—what does this gradient mean chemically, not just how to extract its value—is exactly the reasoning move that data-based exam questions and IA Analysis require.

Content memorization belongs on a separate track and should not crowd lab sessions. Using lab time mainly to catch up on definitions or equations is a missed opportunity that compounds across the course. The narrow exception: spend a brief, time-boxed pre-lab slot on content when a gap prevents correct method choice, variable identification, or safe measurement decisions—those gaps block the uncertainty and evaluation reasoning the lab is meant to rehearse.

Write-Up Discipline and the IA Connection

Every lab write-up with a real evaluation section—one that names a specific limitation, explains its effect on the data, and proposes a concrete improvement—is practicing the IA Evaluation criterion. The contrast is stark. A weak entry reads: ‘Human error when reading the burette; be more careful.’ It names nothing and proposes nothing testable. A mark-relevant entry notes that reading the burette meniscus depends on two volume readings, so any inconsistency contributes to delivered-volume uncertainty and tends to scatter results randomly across trials rather than shift them all in one direction; the proposed fix—a white card behind the burette, with all readings taken at eye level—is a specific change that would demonstrably reduce that scatter. Named limitation, error type, realistic improvement: that’s the structure both IA Evaluation and Paper 2 scenario questions reward.

Paper 2 regularly presents unfamiliar experimental scenarios and asks students to reason about what went wrong, what the data suggests, or how the method could be improved. Students who have practiced this reasoning in write-ups throughout the course approach these questions differently from those applying it under timed conditions for the first time. Routine write-ups are low-stakes rehearsal for high-stakes exam reasoning.

Making Every Lab Session Count for Marks

The question has never been whether to do the lab work—IB Chemistry SL requires it. It’s whether to do it deliberately. Deliberate lab engagement converts required coursework into ongoing marks preparation. The quantitative precision, evaluative language, and data-reasoning habits built in practicals are exactly what written papers and the IA reward.

The prioritization is straightforward: start with uncertainty and measurement precision, which recur across written papers and IA criteria. Build evaluative write-up habits alongside them. Let content memorization happen on its own track. Two years of required practicals can be two years of passive completion—or two years of deliberate, marks-relevant practice. That choice is made in the lab, one write-up at a time.
